More than Kanpeki:
slow.pics from episode 01: https://slow.pics/c/7yAhaDeW.
The most noticeable artefact throughout this anime is its strong ringing around the lines. We could not find the correct kernel for descaling. For scenes that have smaller descaling error, we use vsscale.Rescale
and vsdehalo.edge_cleaner
to filter the frames. For scenes that have larger descaling error, we use vsdehalo.fine_dehalo
and vsaa.based_aa
to filter the frames.
There are not many action scenes in this anime, but most of them have terrible-looking encoding artefacts in the source. To hopefully minimise the artefacts, specifically for action scenes, we use DPIR to deblock, followed by vsdehalo.edge_cleaner
and a stronger gaussian-filtering aa to filter the frames.
This anime is characterised by its heavy film grain. We opt to keep as much grain as possible during the filtering process.
For encoding, we use Progression Boost Preset-Butteraugli-3Norm-INFNorm-Max to deliver a rather high quality encode. This is the Butteraugli 3Norm score of episode 01 with film grain removed compared to the filtered source:
We use SVT-AV1-PSY v2.3.0-Q, and these are the key encoding parameters: --preset [-1 ~ 0] --crf [6.25 ~ 30.00] --tune 3 --enable-tf 1 --kf-tf-strength 1 --tf-strength 2 --sharpness 0 --film-grain 7 --psy-rd 2.6 --spy-rd 0
.
Thanks to all the people creating the tools, plugins and vsfunc's that make this possible, and thanks to everyone in the community for teaching me and giving me advice.
